Put one foot in front of the other...

This morning I went out for a run and before I began running I had this little jingle stuck in my head. While attending Olivet Nazarene University I remember a time where a friend of mine had an issue with her car and she enlisted the help of 3 guys to help push her car back to campus. It was our lucky day though because she was only about a quarter of a mile or so from campus. The thing that I noticed though was that the hardest part of the entire thing was getting the car rolling. Once we were able to get the car rolling and had momentum we were able to push the car at a steady jog down the road. I'm sure local people driving by and probably even a few of our fellow students had a pretty good laugh at us while they drove by us.

The whole point of that is because last night I had a discussion with one of my students who has had an issue of getting out of the dorms on time. He stated that the issue is he hears his alarm clock and shuts it off and then makes the decision to lay there for a few more minutes in hopes of getting up in a few minutes, but usually it is 20-30 minutes later. We've all been there...some more than others, but it is in that moment that we make a decision whether we're going to take that step. Once you take that step you get your momentum going and you're able to start your day.

My best days are often the days where I have no desire to run and I force myself to take that first crucial step on the pavement. Once you take that first step it is easier to simply...*begin singing the song below*

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking out the door

You never will get where you're going
If you never get up on your feet
Come on, there's a good tail wind blowing
A fast walking man is hard to beat

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking out the door

If you want to change your direction
If your time of life is at hand
Well don't be the rule be the exception
A good way to start is to stand

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you'll be walking out the door

If I want to change the reflection
I see in the mirror each morn
You mean that it's just my election
To vote for a chance to be reborn

  1. I never knew you even knew that song! I ALWAYS sing that song in my head when I run. I literally don't think I've ever ran without singing it!
