Whonu?

This past Sunday I sat in an empty room as I watched the big hand on my watch tick over to indicate it was 9:00. It was the first Sunday for the Sunday morning youth small group here at the church that has hired me. I got that sinking feeling that this was going to be a lot more difficult than I had anticipated because no one showed up. I didn't get discouraged, but took it in stride. It was about 10 minutes later that I heard a door open and close and I saw a few students begin to stroll in.
We spent the rest of the time before our 10AM service playing a great game to get to know one another in a small group called "Whonu." It was a great way to get to know the students and for them to get to know me. It was interesting to see what they ranked the different words in terms of their favorites and then for the 2nd half we played what their least favorites were.
I feel it has been a great start so far here at the church. I've started to get a feel for the pulse of the church culture and started forming relationships with students who are going to be key into building a youth ministry at the church that reflects what Christ was all about.

I keep reminding myself over and over...baby steps.

  1. Starting out as a youth pastor is hard. I served as one for the first time at the age of 20 while in college. There were some kids in the church that did not want to accept me because of their loyalty to the former youth pastor. My first day with them, I only had two to show up. God Bless you and your new position.
